English version:

In January 2027, the NSMS Winter Conference will feature the participation of the KomplemeNT Network. The network will host a dedicated morning session on Tuesday and will also contribute to the non-target plenary session after lunch

KomplemeNT is a Norwegian network initiative funded by the Research Council of Norway (2026–2027). It brings together national research communities in non-target chemical analysis and cheminformatics, as well as experts with an interest in relevant applications.

The use of machine learning and computational chemistry in environmental and analytical chemistry is a rapidly growing research field, which is only recently gaining a foothold in applied research. The aim of KomplemeNT is to establish shared meeting arenas to address industry-relevant and societally important challenges, while simultaneously developing tools that can more efficiently handle the type and volume of data produced by high-resolution mass spectrometry in combination with chromatographic separation.

KomplemeNT addresses a wide range of challenges, from fundamental research needs to practical applications. A central focus is the interpretation and utilization of large instrumental datasets from high-resolution techniques, including the development of strategies to extract, filter, and prioritize relevant data. Another key challenge is the elucidation and probabilistic identification of chemical structures without relying on databases. This also involves the application of multivariate methods, machine learning, and computational chemistry to such datasets. Areas of application include environmental monitoring, risk assessment of chemicals and complex mixtures, as well as the development, use, and circular economy of “Safe and Sustainable by Design” (SSbD) materials. Additional areas include food and seafood safety, fish health and welfare, environmentally sustainable aquaculture, coexistence of coastal industries, urban emissions, water and wastewater systems, biomonitoring in ecology (ecotoxicology) and human health (the internal and external exposome), as well as applications in biochemistry and medical technology.

KomplemeNT is led by the Environmental and Analytical Chemistry research group at the Department of Chemistry and Bioengineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). National partners are the University of Bergen (UiB), the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS), the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU), the Norwegian Research Centre AS (NORCE), Norwegian Institute of Public Health (FHI), the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI), SINTEF Ocean, SINTEF Industry, the Institute of Marine Research, and Nofima.

The network will organize seminars and webinars throughout 2026–2027, open to all interested participants.
