About NSMS

The Norwegian Society for Mass Spectrometry (NSMS) is a national society which wishes to promote the subject of mass spectrometry. The Society consists of one organisational unit without subsections.

We are connected to the international MS-milieu by our membership of the “International Mass Spectrometry Foundation”. At the present time our representative to the IMSF is also a member of the “IMSF Executive Board”.

We hold national seminars in mass spectrometry every other year. These are held in areas of the country where there are good skiing opportunities; in other words we try to combine business and pleasure. This ensures a good social atmosphere where previous contacts can be renewed and new ones cultivated.

The NSMS also arranges something we call MS-user meetings. These meeting are arranged in fashion that does not clash with our ordinary winter meetings. The thinking behind this is to get those interested in MS to discuss the subject from the practical point of view. Our aim is to tackle practical problems and challenges in order to help one another with both major and minor issues in the laboratory. See also: List of events organised by the NSMS.

Governing Body

The highest authority within the Society is the general meeting which must be held at least every other year. In practice the general meeting is held in conjunction with our national seminars.
In between general meetings the Society is led by the governing committee which consists of:

Chairman
4 committee members
1 reserve member

MS-environment in Norge

We cover a relatively wide professional circle. We have members who work with theoretical problems within the world of chemistry and we have members who only use MS for analyses connected to their work.

Our society published until 2013 the membership magazine “Massenytt” and many of our members are regular contributors to such international journals as:

European Mass Spectrometry
HD Science Mass Spectrometry and Chromatography Publications
International Journal of Mass Spectrometry and Ion Processes
Journal of Mass Spectrometry
Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry
Mass Spectrometry Reviews
Rapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry

History

The Norwegian Society for Mass Spectrometry was founded on the 6th of April 1973 in Oslo and has grown continuously ever since as more and more laboratories invest in the purchase of mass spectrometers of various types.

The Society has as its aim to promote academic field of mass spectrometry in Norway, amongst other things by arranging meetings and by contributing to creating academic contact and cooperation at home and abroad.

Membership of NSMS

All with an interest in mass spectrometry can become members of the Norwegian Society for Mass Spectrometry. The annual membership fee is currently 100 Norwegian crowns per year.
